YPSLCON 2007 Minutes
AnnouncementsMonday, June 25th 2007

Those present: Joey, Anne, Jay, Peter, Ed, Matt, Mary

Matt gives his treasurer's report.

In total we have $1798 in the treasury, between three different accounts.

We nominate Stephanie and Shirley (not present) for the NEC, and decide to hold elections on Tuesday to give them time to

accept or decline the nominations.

Some discussion about upcoming campaigns and utilizing the website, and updating it with more technology, such as internet

radio or podcasts, and using more video media and hosting it on YouTube.

No War but Class War campaign --

- we have a flyer

- need more on the website

- working with Solidarity's Rank 'n' File Youth Project (Peter)

We need to talk to Josh about website updates, for instance, updating our constitution and Youth Rights Platform on our

website.

We discussed setting youth up with internships at the Socialist Party National Office in NYC. We'd have to find them

housing/stipend. Maybe they could intern with both the SP and the IWW -- get a job at Starbucks?

- Joey agrees to look into this more and work it out with Greg.

Mary proposes a resolution:

Every NEC member shall be expected to lead 1 project/campaign per year and to volunteer to assist on 1 other project/campaign

per year. NEC members leading projects will be responsible for organizing work groups, being the contact person for that

project, and delivering monthly reports to the NEC list, NOC list and website.

The resolution passes unanimously.

Mary proposes another resolution:

Every new member should be contacted within 1 week of submitting their application. The National Secretary should send new

member's contact information to the closest NEC member, in the absence of a Regional Organizing Committee, by location,

interest, or randomly (in that order), who will then follow up with them.

The resolution passes unanimously.

We discuss the website, and whether their should be a members-only section for the boards, or whether we can set up some way

of signifying who is and who is not a member of YPSL, to avoid views that aren't compatible with the organization being

mistaken for views that YPSL members hold. We discuss linking up the YPSL database with the website.

- Mary is instructed to get with Josh to try to work this out.

We discuss how often mailings should be sent out, and whether these should be through email or snail mail. Email saves paper

and time, but the argument is made that it's important to send out snail mail, too.

Jay proposes a resolution:

The membership form shall have a new field asking applicants whether they would prefer YPSL mailings in paper or electronic

form. The form shall read as follows:

The YPSL has two semi-regular publications. The Torch is our quarterly newspaper and the Young Socailist Review is our

internal announcement bulletin. Please check one of the following:

_ I would like to receive YPSL's publications in a paper copy via snail mail at the address listed above.

_ I would like to receive YPSL's publications in an electronic copy via the email address I listed above.

Resolution passes, 5 in favor, 0 abstentions, 2 against

Joey lost his job and is absent for the next vote.

We decide that the YSR should come out twice per year. Unanimous 6-0-0

Joey is nominated for the position of Editor.

Joey accepts his nomination.

Joey is elected unanimously.

Joey doesn't like themes for The Torch. We talk about revamping Torch Collective, contacting everyone on the listserv as

well as new people, switching to Google Groups.

Matt introduces a motion.

Motion: Supporting the formation of Regional Organizing Committees

A call to yipsels shall be sent out to the NEC, NOC, and ypsl.org inviting members to organize regional gatherings with the

purpose in part being to form Regional Organizing Committees in accordance to the YPSL Constitution. Submissions will be due

by September 1st for the intended meeting to occur during or between the months of November through January. Logistical

details will be announced to the membership through the Young Socialist Review (YSR) by October 1st.

Upon the pre-registration of 3 non-NEC yipsels, the NEC shall commit $100 and the sending of an organizer with YPSL campaign

materials to the planned meeting to form an ROC.

Passes unanimously.

- Matt, write ROC invite.

We talk about the projects we're going to take on this coming year. We agree to take on the following projects:

Podcasts/alt media -- Jay (backup: Mary)

The Torch -- Joey (Jay)

Fundraise -- Matt

No War but Class War -- Peter (Matt)

Healthcare -- Ed (Peter)

Student union guide -- Mary (Anne)

Outreach -- Anne (Ed)

Immigration -- Shirley (backup?)

Website -- Josh

YPSL members should contact any of these people listed if they are interested in working on one of these projects

Reconvene Tuesday, June 26th at 6:40 pm

Anne, Jay, Matt, Ed, Peter, Joey, and Mary present.

Daniel (SP Chattanooga) observing.

We have a go-round of what we would like to see YPSL accomplish, what YPSL's place is, our feelings.

Some of the things said include:

- advocating for a youth perspective in all we do

- we need more delegation of duties

- we need to find ways to keep people interested and motivated between conventions

- we need to get the word out there by going into schools, taking roadtrips

- seek out unorganized socialists, rival ISO on campuses

- we need stronger locals

- better utilizing the website

- have more people involved in National Conventions, even if they cannot attend

Jay, Joey, and Anne put forward a resolution to expand the NEC to include officers. It reads:

Motion to amend Article VI:

Section 1: The National Executive Committee shall consist of the National Chair, National Vice-Chair(s), National Secretary,

Treasurer, Secretary of Technology, and Editor of The Torch, plus any number of additional members as decided by the National

Convention. In addition, the National Convention shall elect any number of alternates to the National Executive Committee, in

ranked order, to serve out the terms of any members of the Committee who cannot do so.

Section 4: The NEC shall replace all members who resign or become inactive. The general definition of inactive is to be out

of contact for more than two months. This process shall be done by appointment by the active NEC. The appointed replacement

member shall be seated on the NEC without a vote until a referendum or National Convention can elect a voting member.

Referenda shall be held in accordance with sections 2-5 of article XI.

Elections:

Anne Boatner is nominated for Chair.

Peter Moody is nominated for Chair.

They take questions. We vote by secret ballot. Mary Parham (SP Chattanooga) counts the ballots.

Anne - 4

Peter - 2

Abstentions - 1

Peter Moody is nominated for Vice Chair.

Elected Unanimously.

Josh Benson nominated for Secretary of Technology

Elected unanimously

Matt Andrews nominated for Treasurer

Elected Unanimously

Mary L. nominated for National Secretary

Elected Unanimously

Ed McCorkindale nominated for NEC

Elected Unanimously

Jay Cassano nominated for NEC

Elected unanimously

We decide to elect Shirley Diaz provisionally, given she accepts her nomination within 72 hours.

I'd like to be the back-up person to help Shirley on Immigration issues. There are actually a lot of immigrant-student issues we could work on. Here in Boston there are a lot of universities with international students, and an active immigrant rights coalition called the Boston May Day Coalition, which the Socialist Party is already working with. I also work with immigrants at my job and am learning Spanish.

I am attempting to start a local chapter in Grosse Pointe Mi, near Detroit. I would be honored to help in anyway for the cause.

What do you think of Chavez's Fifth International?

It's the best thing since sliced bread!

It has potential, but I'm reserving judgment.

Shouldn't this be, like, the Seventh or Eighth International?

It's doomed. Doomed, I say!

What? Never heard of it.

@SocRed15 Rebuilding offers plenty of room for recorruption. Cleaning out house the house would be plenty easier.
